Short answer
For most small businesses, the answer is no. ChatGPT only mentions about 1 in 100 local businesses when somebody asks for a recommendation in a given category. If you haven't done the work to be one of the few it knows about, it doesn't.
The longer answer depends on three things: how complete your Google Business Profile is, whether you have a real presence on Yelp (active, with recent reviews), and whether your shop has turned up in any "best [thing] in [city]" Reddit threads in the last two years. Get those right and ChatGPT starts to mention you. Skip them and you stay in the 99%.
How to check today
Two ways. One free and a bit slow. One free and very fast.
The manual way (15 minutes)
Open ChatGPT and run these four kinds of prompts, one at a time:
- "What's a good [your category] in [your city]?"
Example: "What's a good barber in Pilsen, Chicago?" - "Where should I go for [the specific thing you do] near [neighborhood]?"
Example: "Where should I go for tacos al pastor near Logan Square?" - "I'm new in town. What's the best [your category] around [landmark]?"
- "Compare a few good [your category] options near [your zip code]."
If your business is named in at least one of those four, you're on ChatGPT. If you're named in three or four of them, you're in good shape. If you're not in any of them, you have work to do.
The fast way (30 seconds)
Use the free instant check on the Kodo homepage. Type your business name and city. We run the same kinds of prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity, Gemini, and the Apple/Siri stack at once, plus a few you wouldn't think to ask, and show you the results on one page. No signup, no card, takes about half a minute.
Why your shop might be missing
The three reasons we see in 80% of cases, in order of how common they are:
Your Google Business Profile is half-done
ChatGPT reads Google Business Profile data through Bing's index. If your profile is missing photos, missing hours, has the wrong phone number, or hasn't been updated in two years, ChatGPT either ignores your shop or describes it with stale info. This is the easiest fix. Most owners can finish their profile in 20 minutes.
Your Yelp page is dead
Yelp is the single largest source ChatGPT cites for local recommendations. Over a quarter of citations in a 2026 study of 267,000 AI answers traced back to a Yelp page or Yelp review. If your Yelp page is unclaimed, has outdated info, or hasn't gotten a new review in two years, it tells ChatGPT to skip you.
You don't show up in Reddit threads about your area
People ask Reddit for local recommendations a lot. Threads like "best barber in Brooklyn" or "where do you get tacos in Houston" rank well on Google and get cited by ChatGPT during web search. You don't control what people post, but you can ask happy customers to mention you when they see the question come up. This is slow and a bit awkward but it works.
How to get on ChatGPT
The work, in plain order:
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Add 8+ photos, current hours, the right phone, a thorough description, your categories. Post once a week for a month.
- Claim your Yelp page. Update your photo, your hours, your description. Reply to every review you've ever gotten. Ask your three most loyal customers for a new review.
- Claim your business on Apple Maps Connect (free at mapsconnect.apple.com). Same info, less effort, because Apple Maps mostly accepts what Google has if your phone number matches.
- Make sure your name, address, and phone are identical across Google, Yelp, Facebook, and Apple Maps. One typo anywhere can cost you visibility.
- Re-run the check in two weeks. The grade should move.
If you'd rather not do steps 2 through 5 yourself, Kodo's Grow plan at $39 a month does most of this for you and re-runs the check every month so you can see what's moving.
of ChatGPT queries trigger a live web search. The rest are answered from training data. That's why a Yelp update in May might show up in ChatGPT's answer the same week, while a brand-new business takes longer.
What about Google AI, Siri, Gemini?
Same idea, different sources. The work overlaps a lot, but each assistant has its own quirks.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode read your Google Business Profile directly. They also pull from Reddit threads in your area and from your own website if you have one.
- Gemini overlaps heavily with Google AI but also weighs your website's structure (if it has one). A clean, up-to-date page with your hours and address helps.
- Siri goes through Apple Maps. If you're not on Apple Maps, Siri can't find you, period. Yelp is a major source on top of Apple Maps because Apple syndicates Yelp reviews.
- Perplexity cites industry directories more than the others. Restaurants get cited from TripAdvisor and OpenTable; contractors from HomeAdvisor and Angi; doctors from Healthgrades. Knowing your category's main directory matters.
Common questions
Is my business on ChatGPT?
Maybe. ChatGPT recommends only about 1 in 100 local businesses for any given category search (MarketingCode, 2026). Most shops are invisible. The easiest way to find out is to ask ChatGPT directly: "What's a good [your category] in [your city]?" If your business isn't named in the answer, you're not on ChatGPT in any meaningful sense.
How do I check if ChatGPT knows my business?
Two ways. The slow way: open ChatGPT, ask three or four questions a real customer would ask about your category and area, and see if your name comes up. The fast way: use the free instant check on this site. Type your business name and city, and we run the same kinds of questions across ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity, Gemini, and Siri in about 30 seconds.
Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?
Usually one of three things. (1) Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or hasn't been updated. (2) You're missing from Yelp or your Yelp page has stale info. (3) You don't show up in any "best [thing] in [city]" Reddit thread that ChatGPT might have read during training or web search. Fix the first two and a lot of the third sorts itself out.
How do I get my business on ChatGPT?
ChatGPT doesn't have a sign-up. You get on it by being in the sources ChatGPT reads: a complete Google Business Profile, an active Yelp page, a Facebook business page, and (for Siri) Apple Maps. Get those right and ChatGPT starts to recommend you within a few weeks. Kodo automates the checking and the fixing.
Will ChatGPT mention my business soon if I fix everything?
Usually within a few weeks. ChatGPT runs a web search on about 35% of queries (DemandSage, 2026), so changes to your Yelp page and Google profile show up in answers fast. For the queries that rely on ChatGPT's training data, you'll need to wait for the next training cycle or rank in a Reddit thread that ChatGPT cites at runtime.
Can I pay to get my business on ChatGPT?
No. There's no ad slot or paid placement inside ChatGPT's answers. You earn the mention the old-fashioned way: by being a real business with a clean Google Business Profile, current info everywhere, and good reviews. Tools like Kodo speed up the work; they don't bribe ChatGPT.
What about Google's AI, Gemini, and Siri?
Same idea, different sources. Gemini reads your Google Business Profile directly. Siri reads Apple Maps and Yelp. Perplexity leans on industry directories (TripAdvisor for restaurants, HomeAdvisor for contractors). Cross-assistant overlap is only about 11%, so a tool that only checks ChatGPT misses most of the picture. Kodo checks all of them.
